Dental Bonding | Dr. Aldo Leopardi, Denver Prosthodontist

Dental bonding is one of the pillars of modern cosmetic dentistry, offering outstanding aesthetic results while avoiding many of the drawbacks of veneers, crowns and fillings. For Dr. Aldo Leopardi, Denver Prosthodontist, dental bonding has proven a highly effective treatment for patients looking for a minimally invasive, cost-effective treatment for minor dental repairs. For more information on dental bonding, Greenwood Village patients can come in for a private one-on-one consultation—or simply read on for more details.

What is the Procedure for Dental Bonding?

Greenwood Village patients who come to our office for dental bonding will first undergo a thorough private consultation with Dr. Leopardi to determine if dental bonding will achieve the best results for them. If so, you’ll schedule an appointment for the procedure, which typically only takes one visit. Dr. Leopardi will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel to shape the tooth. Next, the surface of the tooth will be painlessly “roughened” in order to help the bonding material adhere (sort of like sanding before painting). A putty-like resin is applied to the tooth and then shaped and smoothed to the desired shape. Once everything looks perfect, a special ultraviolet light is used to permanently harden the dental bonding material. Dr. Leopard will then finish up by trimming and shaping it further and polishing the tooth.

The entire procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.

What Can Dental Bonding Repair?

Dental bonding can be used to repair decayed teeth, chipped or cracked teeth and whiten discolored teeth. Dental bonding can also be used to close gaps between teeth, make your teeth look longer and change the shape of your teeth. Dental bonding can typically be used as an alternative to amalgam or metal fillings. The resin is tinted to match the color of your natural teeth so it is virtually undetectable.

What Are the Advantages of Dental Bonding?

Compared to crowns, veneers and fillings, dental bonding is less invasive, less costly and less time-consuming. Crowns and veneers must be custom-made in a lab to match the shape, structure and color of your teeth—but with dental bonding, all of that is done right in the office during a single visit. Also, compared to other cosmetic procedures, dental bonding removes the least amount of enamel. Lastly, unless dental bonding is being used to fill a cavity, anesthesia is not required.
