Gum Grafts

Gingival recession, also known as receding gums, is the exposure of roots caused by loss of gum tissue. This is a common problem and is often caused by inadequate brushing or flossing. The result is bacteria buildup with gradual loss of gum tissue and potential loss teeth.

The loss of gum tissue can be treated with a gum graft. The gum graft uses a thin piece of tissue taken from the roof of the mouth or the tissue is gently moved over from adjacent areas.  The graft creates a stable band of attached gingiva to surround and protect the tooth. This procedure can be done for one tooth or several teeth in order to even out the gum line and reduce sensitivity.

Gum grafts may be performed as part of your reconstructive treatment in order to save as many of your natural teeth as possible. When done, a gum graft can reduce further recession and bone loss. In most cases, the exposed roots that were covered will be protected from decay. This will greatly improve periodontal health and may reduce sensitivity as well.

Should a gum graft be necessary, Dr. Aldo Leopardi of DenteVita Prosthodontics will discuss where it fits in with your overall treatment plan during your consultation. Please call us today at 720-488-7677 to schedule a consultation.
