Overdenture Procedure: Stress-Broken Design

Case Study Details

Before: History of long-standing edentulism (missing all upper and lower teeth). The old lower denture lacked stability, retention and comfort.

Treatment: Placement of two conventional dental implants in the lower anterior (front/chin) jaw, and attaching solitary anchor systems (ball-abutments). A new/revised upper removable complete conventional denture and new metal-reinforced lower overdenture was constructed.

Maintenance: The overdenture has resilient clips inside. These clips wear and are to be replaced every 6 to 12 months. Stress-broken designs continue to be supported by the tissues. Consequently, bone continues to melt away over time behind the implants. As bone melts away, the overdenture procedure will no longer adapt/fit the tissues. Consequently, laboratory relines with new intraoral clip housing pick-up and attachments is required every 2 to 3 years. Plastic denture teeth will wear and new dental prosthetic will be required every 8 to 10 years, depending on the rate of wear. To avoid/minimize bone loss, multiple implants with a rigid-design prosthesis is required.
