Restore Your Smile to its Natural State with Veneers

Category: Blog Dental Implants

Teeth that are slightly stained, chipped, or misaligned to the point it creates a gap can often be fixed with veneers. This cosmetic dentistry technique can help patients restore their smile in a short period of time.
Veneers are a permanent, often irreversible dental treatment. If you are thinking of getting them placed, it is important to not only understand what veneers are, but also to understand how they are done. Understanding these things will help you determine if veneers are right for you.

A Closer Look at Veneers

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is placed on top of a tooth. The veneer is created to look exactly like a natural tooth so it blends in with the surrounding teeth.
There are a number of reasons why you may need veneers. Some of the following are the most common reasons why people consider getting veneers:

• Stained teeth – stains that cannot be removed using traditional teeth whitening.
Chipped or cracked teeth.
• Cover up gaps that developed between teeth.
• Improve shape, contour and color of the teeth.

Veneers are custom made. This allows them to fit snuggly into a person’s mouth and not cause discomfort or pain. The customization also allows individuals to receive veneers that blend in nicely with the color of their surrounding teeth.

Veneers are extreme sturdy, but they are not built to last. A properly placed veneer can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years before it will need to be replaced.
Patients must think carefully about getting veneers. Once the process has been started, it cannot be reversed. You will always have to have veneers placed on the teeth, as there is no way to go back to your natural teeth.

The Process of Placing Veneers on Teeth

Placing veneers on teeth is a relatively pain-free and quick process. In fact, it takes just two to three office visits to complete the entire process.
The first veneer appointment involves prepping the teeth for your veneers. The Prosthodontist will completely clean any tooth that will have a veneer placed on it. Once the tooth is cleaned, the Prosthodontist will remove some of the tooth/teeth’s enamel (as needed). Enamel needs to be strategically removed in order to make room for the veneer. Every tooth will have different requirements determined ahead of time during the diagnostic gathering and smile design preparation phase prior to the first veneer preparation appointment.

After the tooth has been prepped, the Prosthodontist will make an impression of the tooth or set of teeth that need veneers. This impression will be sent off to a laboratory that will make the veneers. It can take anywhere from four to six weeks for the laboratory to make the veneers.

Before you leave your first dental appointment, your dentist will place a prototype veneer on the teeth. This will protect your tooth while you wait for the actual veneer to arrive. Also, the prototypes will give you and the dental technician a good idea of desired tooth shape and color.

The second/third appointment is dedicated to placing the veneers on your teeth. You will arrive at the office, where the Prosthodontist will remove the temporary veneers. Upon removal, your teeth will be cleaned and cement will be placed on the tooth. The cement is used to adhere it to your teeth.

It takes only a few minutes to have the veneer bond to the tooth. Once this is completed, your dentist/periodontist will remove any excess material that is left on the veneer, polish up the sides and adjust your bite. When this is done, you are ready to go.

If you have a chipped/cracked tooth, stained teeth, or noticeable gaps, veneers may be right for you. Schedule an appointment with your Prosthodontist to discuss how this dental Implants procedure may be able to help you.
