Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is one of the most convenient and least expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures offered at DenteVita Prosthodontics and the Practice of Dr. Aldo Leopardi. Unlike veneers which are created in our lab, bonding can usually be completed in a single visit.
By using a cosmetic dentistry approach, Denver Prosthodontist Dr. Aldo Leopardi frequently utilizes tooth bonding to improve the appearance of discolored or chipped teeth to help you achieve a more amazing smile. This process involves the application of a composite resin that is color matched, shaped, polished and then bonded to match the surrounding teeth. Dental bonding can also be used to close spaces between teeth, make teeth look longer or change the actual shape of the tooth. In some instances, bonding is used to protect a portion of a tooth’s root that has been exposed due to receding gums.
Typically, no preparation is needed for bonding, unless it is being used to fill a decayed or defective tooth. Anesthesia is not always required.
While tooth bonding is one of the most affordable cosmetic dental treatments, it’s important to understand that the composite resin used in bonding isn’t as strong as a natural tooth. Chewing ice or hard candy can chip the material. Tea, coffee, cigarette smoke and red wine can also stain the bonded teeth. We recommend avoiding eating or drinking foods that can stain bonded teeth for 48 hours after your procedure. And as always, brush your teeth often and have regular cleanings.
Bonding vs. Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are made in our lab under exacting conditions while bonding uses a composite resin. Porcelain veneers are more like your original teeth and are much harder than the composite resins used in bonding. They are also more resistant to stains. If you think about the daily abuse you put your teeth through, you’ll appreciate why many patients choose dental veneers over cosmetic bonding.
