Dental Tooth Supported Bridge
A dental tooth supported bridge is a non-implant solution for replacing one or more teeth. This solution if faster than implants and can look very natural. They are called bridges because they actually span the gap where teeth are missing. With a tooth supported bridge, the replacement teeth are held in place by a crown glued to the abutment teeth adjacent to the “gap.”
The use of a tooth supported bridge is a very common. They look very natural and with proper care will potentially last many years. This type of bridge can also:
- Restore your ability chew
- Maintain the shape of your cheeks
- Correct your bite
- Protect your remaining teeth by holding them in position
Since a tooth supported bridge is cemented onto the adjacent teeth, the bridge doesn’t need to be removed at night and adhesives are not necessary.
This procedure has several disadvantages when compared to dental implants. Here are a few of them.
- The healthy abutment teeth need to be ground down to accept the crowns that hold the bridge in place.
- Natural bone underneath the bridge is not stimulated, as it is with an implant, and may melt away over time.
- The bridge may not last as long as implant-supported teeth.
