What Are Fixed Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a type of artificial teeth. They are commonly used to replace natural teeth when they are missing or have become severely damaged from either an injury or severe tooth decay. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth located in close proximity to each other, or all the teeth in the mouth.

One of the advantages dental implants have over other types of artificial teeth is they are securely implanted into the jawbone. Using a surgical procedure, your Prosthodontist will implant a small titanium rod into the upper or lower jaw. This titanium rod acts as a support mechanism to the entire dental implant. This is the support that is typically provided by a tooth’s root, but which will be missing when the actual tooth is removed.

Once the titanium rod is securely placed in the jawbone, it will take anywhere from four to six months for the bone to heal around it. After the healing process is complete, the Prosthodontist will place a crown or cap on top of the titanium rod. The crown or cap looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. Placement of the crown or cap on the titanium rod is the last step of the dental implant process.

Even though the dental implant process is complex and time-consuming, it has numerous benefits that make it worthwhile. The biggest benefit is its ability to replace missing or damaged teeth without damaging adjacent teeth. Patients can replace just a single tooth without having to shave or file down healthy adjacent teeth. Other benefits of dental implants include being a long term solution for missing or damaged teeth, their ability to look and feel like natural teeth, and they are low maintenance.

Reasons to Consider Dental Implants

Typically, patients are advised about dental implants when they have one or more missing teeth and are seeking a long-term solution. Dr. Leopardi recommends dental implants because they address both surface and underlying dental concerns. On the surface:

  • Gaps may detract from a person’s appearance. As a result, he or she may become self-conscious, whether it’s reluctance to stand for photographs or hiding his or her mouth while talking with others.
  • Gaps may make chewing food more difficult or may limit what a person can eat.
  • When a person is missing multiple teeth, it can cause the skin around the mouth to collapse inward, giving a sunken impression to his or her looks.

One of the major reasons that Dr. Leopardi recommends dental implants over other forms of tooth replacement is that they help to maintain jaw bone and supporting gum tissue profiles. Without dental implants, some patients may experience bone resorption (bone loss), which can create an even more pronounced gap in their mouth.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a proven, high-quality solution to gaps in a patient’s mouth. An expert Prosthodontist with Dr. Leopardi’s training can match implants to the person’s natural teeth and improve their overall appearance and function. Unlike other procedures, such as dental bridges, the replacement tooth does not rely on the strength of adjacent teeth. As a result, implants do not cause the same sort of wear and strain that bridges can.

Dental implants are typically more expensive than other solutions due to the surgical time, expertise, and materials involved. However, many patients find that the up-front fee is a good investment compared to the reoccurring costs of less long-term solutions.

Dr. Leopardi is available to answer questions about the expense of dental implants, provide guidance to patients, and help them achieve the appearance and function they have always wanted. Call 720-488-7677 to get started.
